Media Usage Way Up for Kids and Teens, but Particularly for Black and Latino Children

The Kaiser Family Foundation recently released a report that shows that the amount of time young people are spending with entertainment media has increased signifcantly over the past five years, rising from 6.21 hours to 7.38. When taking into account "media multitasking," the number actually adds up to 10:45 minutes per day.

Among other interesting findings, the results of the study show that mobile media and social networking are driving this increased consumption, and that Black and Hispanic children spend much more time with media than White children do - 13:00 hours of of total media exposure for Hispanics, 12:59 for Blacks, and 8:36 for Whites.

The news release says that "top online activities include social networking (:22 a day), playing games (:17), and visiting video sites such as YouTube (:15).  Three-quarters (74%) of all 7th - 12th graders say they have a profile on a social networking site."

YouTube, Univision and Google Strike a Deal to Reach the Online Hispanic Market

Univsion and YouTube sign an agreement to make Univision's content available on Google's GOOG video site. This is the first time that Univision has published its content on non-Univision sites, but probably won't be the last because the deal is non-exclusive.

Chris Maxcy, who is head of Content Partnerships at YouTube, said that they've seen 6.5 million Hispanic adults visit YouTube in the past year, an increase of 80 percent.  He also said that the Hispanic audience has been overlooked, but that it is one of the fastest growing online communities.

Telemundo's new Digital Media and Emerging Business division

Recognizing both the growing importance of the Hispanic market and the explosion of digital media, Telemundo is creating a new Digital Media and Emerging Businesses division that will focus on delivering programming and content around the world on websites and mobile phones. Users will be able to access more shows, watch their favorite novelas (soap operas), and even suggest alternative plots to Telemundo producers.

Jose Cancela, of Hispanic USA, a Miami-based consulting firm, points out that over time local TV stations will be less and less important and “how you get content before somebody's eyeballs is going to be changing in the next few years.”  He adds that Telemundo's strategy is smart because this is where the market is headed.'

Peter Blacker, the head of head of Telemundo's new Digital Media, said that Telemundo is “pushing the envelope . . . to use this new technology not just to distribute but to engage our audience.'
