Share Your Ideas on How Federal Websites Can Better Serve Limited English Proficient Latinos Online

If you have ideas regarding how the government can improve federal websites, please join the discussion and share them in the National Dialogue on Improving Federal Websites that started today!

It's a two week online dialogue, from Sept. 19-30th, and the government would like to hear your ideas and suggestion on what it should do to improve federal websites in the following areas: 

1. Creating better user experience, navigation, and design
2. Improving content to make it more readable, engaging, and useful
3. Improving how services and transactions are delivered
4. Providing universal access to government content online, regardless of device or technology
5. Optimizing the way the public is able to search for federal content, via federal websites and commercial search engines
6. Ensuring content on federal websites is integrated with social media and other third-party websites
7. Improve how federal websites protect privacy and security
8. Reaching global audiences and people with limited English proficiency

The Center for American Progress - How they are Reaching the Hispanic Community

In September 2010, the Center for American Progress launched CAP en Español, a new website featuring content in Spanish, with the stated goal of furthering “ the Center’s commitment to reaching a diverse audience and engaging the broader community in its work.”  At the time, the Center’s President and CEO John Podesta remarked “we are taking steps to be more inclusive in our work and this new website is a natural next step to reach out to the rapidly growing Latino community."

Expanding Markets through Educational Initiatives - ING's New Interactive Site

ING has recently launched an interactive educational site in Spanish (www.INGEspanol.com) that was designed to educate less acculturated Latinos about life insurance, helping them learn about the product and determine the correct amount suggested for their particular situation. 

The press release highlights data from a study by the industry association LIMRA, which shows that Latino households are much less likely to own individual life insurance compared to the general population (36% vs. 54%), and that they are likely to be underinsured due to the difficulty of determining just how much insurance they should have. 

The site uses Hispanic actors and culturally-relevant references, and is a good example of a company developing a unique and interactive site to educate potential Hispanic clients in order to expand its market.

The Hispanic Consumer on the Rise

A recent AdAge article, written by Peter Francese, highlights some very interesting data on the growth, characteristics and future of the Hispanic market.

Mr. Francese compares the growing Hispanic market to America in the 1950s with young, large, community-oriented families, which often include grandparents, migrating to the suburbs and pursing a better life for their children.

The main point of the article is that this growing market and culture will become more and more important as baby boomers retire and reduce their consumer spending.

The Latino Digital Divide and Young Latinos' Cell Phone Usage

The Pew Hispanic Center released two new reports today: The Latino Digital Divide: The Native Born versus The Foreign Born and How Young Latinos Communicate with Friends in the Digital Age

One of the key findings in the first report is that technology among foreign born Latinos still lags behind their U.S.-born counterparts, especially in the area of Internet use.

  

The second report on how young Latinos communicate provides some great data on how Latinos ages 16-25 use their cell phones to communicate as summarized in the table below, the differences between natives and foreign born, and cell phone ownership and use as compared to young non-Hispanics.

Californian Republican Candidate Courts Online Latinos

Going up against the candidate favored by many Latinos, Barbara Boxer, the Republican candidate Carly Fiorina thought it wise to reach out to Latinos online in hopes of courting one third of the population in California.

Although her website is strictly informational and her blog currently only offers a press release - which is not what blogs are for - the candidate opens herself up to the world on her Facebook page.

Unfortunately many are opposed to the fact that she's trying to reach them in Spanish (see the section on her wall where she announced the launch of the new site and the subsequent comments).

It should be interesting to see what kind of questions she gets regarding her support for Arizona's anti-immigrant legislation.
